With longer winters in Minneapolis, we always try to squeeze as much into summer as we can. As the kids are getting older, we are continually discovering fun things to do in and around the Twin Cities! Summer this year as flown by. We have definitely been making the most of it and taking advantage of the hot summer days!
We Have a First Grader
Summer started off with Carter having his last day of kindergarten on June 2nd. Vish and I both enjoyed participating in the June Jamboree (Field Day) with his class. Vish ended up being the target in the dunk tank, which of course the kids loved. He ended up going in quite a few times.
Carter had such a wonderful year of kindergarten, I can’t believe he will be a first grader in the fall.
When the Kids are Away, the Parents will Play
Carter didn’t have summer Kids Place for the first week after school, so our parents graciously offered to have the kids in Iowa for a week. I know Carter and Henry had a blast in Iowa hanging out with their grandparents, uncles, and cousins. In Iowa City, they went to multiple parks, rode the rides and City Park and Carter did Safety Village.
At the same time, Vish and I enjoyed some kid-free time trying new restaurants, taking a cooking class, and getting some extra sleep! We are all looking forward to this hopefully new tradition!
Improving our Putt-putt skills
Vish has always been a huge golfer, and this summer as a family we have started to enjoy putt-putt golf. We have gone to a few places this summer, and it has been very fun to see the kids navigate each whole. Henry especially has started to put into practice our attempts at teaching him to “line up” with the ball. He usually hits one with us to start the hole, then picks up his ball and puts it a few inches away from the hole, then lines himself up again on his own and tries to knock it in.
Early in the summer on a rainy day we went to Can-Can Wonderland in St. Paul. It has a very artistic and eclectic putt-putt golf course, crazy treats (the boys had a Lucky Charms Milkshake), old-school arcade games, and art activities for everyone. We had been wanting to go here for a while and it did not disappoint.
A few weeks later, I took the boys down to the newly re-opened Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. In addition to many of the classic sculptures (iconic Spoon & Cherry) and new sculptures, they also have a putt-putt golf course each summer with many Minnesota-themed holes. The boys really enjoyed the golfing and exploring the sculptures.
This year we decided to get pool passes at the St. Louis Park Aquatic Center to hopefully get in a little more pool time. We have visited quite a few times and both boys have loved it (as long as the weather is warm enough). Carter decided to try the body slide this year, with his improved swimming skills. He was nervous at first, but now he loves it. He usually goes down it at least 3 times during each trip to the pool. Henry loves going down the tube slide with Vish and/or me. His joyful screaming riding down together never gets old.
Visits from Family
Grandma and Grandpa Yem came to visit with cousin Calista in mid-July and the weekend was non-stop fun. Both of our boys adore spending time with their grandparents and cousin; the weekend was no exception. We all had fun at the pool on Saturday going down the waterslides. Carter and Calista even did the obstacle course in the deep end, working together to get to the end. On Sunday, we all went to the Minnesota Zoo, where we saw a variety of animals. Highlights included being in an open area with Kangaroos, petting and brushing goats, and getting up close with the Grizzly Bears as they were getting fed and cooling off in the water. Such a fun weekend!
At the end of July, Grandma and Grandpa Kron, Uncle Nick, Aunt Taylor and Boomer came to visit. We had a fun weekend celebrating Grandma Kron’s birthday at Chino Latino, eating donuts and playing cards.
